Waverley Council supports changes to assist local businesses and customers during cycleway construction

Waverley Council last night adopted a suite of measures to assist local businesses and customers during the construction of the Bondi Junction cycleway.

Mayor of Waverley, Councillor John Wakefield moved the changes in a Mayoral Minute at last night’s Council meeting.

“We acknowledge the disruption that the current construction of the cycleway in Bondi Junction is causing to local businesses and their customers, and the concerns they have raised,” Councillor Wakefield said.

“Staff have engaged with affected businesses to hear concerns and ideas on how Council can help.

“The cycleway is one element of a wider footpath, landscaping and seating upgrade and the project is primarily funded by the State Government as part of a regional cycleway plan. While a number of measures have been put in place already, I recognise there is more that could and should have been done.”

Changes will include:

  • Switching off parking meters in the streets immediately surrounding the cycleway construction to assist local businesses and their customers:
    • Beginning with the parking meters in Denison Street (between Ebley Street and Oxford Street), Spring Street (between Newland Street and Denison Street) and Newland Street (between Ebley Street and Oxford Street) during the current construction stage
    • Regulatory time limits will remain in place to ensure parking turnover.
  • A rolling program of similar changes to parking meters will occur throughout the cycleway construction; and
  • Extending the hours of operation in Council’s Eastgate, Hollywood and Library car parks
  • Offering 2-hour free parking to all users of the Library car park

“Additionally, Council will install temporary directional signage in the area immediately surrounding the cycleway construction to assist road users in seeking alternative parking opportunities,” Councillor Wakefield said.

Longer-term permanent signage which guides road users to available parking within Council’s car parks (like the sign currently opposite Hollywood car park) will be investigated.

“We will implement the list of changes as soon as practically possible and write to local businesses to advise them of the additional measures being put in place by Council,” Councillor Wakefield said.
