Interpreter & translation services

Contacting Council

The Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) can be used by members of the public to contact and speak to council staff.

When you ring TIS state the language you require and you will be connected to an interpreter over the phone. If your matter is more complicated, lengthy ( more than 15 minutes) or involves the explanation of legal or technical terms, we can arrange an interpreter to attend an appointment with you to assist with this matter. This is a FREE service.

TIS is available 24hours a day 7 days per week

Communicating with the community

Language Aide Program

Council has a language aide program for staff to use to communicate more effectively with our non- English speaking background (NESB) residents. Language aides are council staff members who have passed a level one CLAS accreditation test. They are not qualified interpreters. Their role is to assist with better, more accessible and easier communication with our residents and community.

We currently have 7 accredited language aides in the following languages.

  • Russian
  • Polish
  • Spanish
  • Portuguese
  • Cantonese
  • Cantonese/Mandarin
  • Japanese

This service can be used by any staff member who needs to speak with customers who have limited or no English to ensure council gives the best possible service to our customers.

If the language you require is not available through our language aide program or if the language aides are not available then please contact the Translating and Interpreting service.
