Waverley - a great place to live and visit

The Waverley Local Government Area is vibrant and diverse, and has become increasingly popular with visitors and people who make their home here. It combines the benefits of a laid-back beach culture and stunning natural features with thriving shopping, commercial and retail domains in Bondi Junction and at Bondi, and small neighbourhood villages.

Many residents were born overseas, bringing with them their culture, skills and experiences. We have a large Russian speaking community, many small ethnic groups and a strong Jewish presence. This, together with large numbers of visitors and tourists contributes to the cosmopolitan flair and relaxed holiday atmosphere many people find so attractive. Waverley's indigenous heritage is significant and Council supports its recognition, protection and preservation.

Waverley is also a place where the pressures of a densely populated area, the lack of open space and the high cost of living are felt by many residents. Our community includes many different people from all walks of life. While known to be an affluent area, there are also a lot of people doing it tough.

 Supporting our diverse community
Waverley Council delivers a range of community services and activities to support and nurture our diverse community. We also hold a range of free community, cultural and arts events throughout the year that recognise and celebrate the diverse and distinctive character of our area.
 Be involved and connected
Council is keen to help people to fully participate in and contribute to community life and we offer many opportunities for people to get involved. Some of these activities and events can be found under the banner of Civic Pride.
 Planning ahead
To get it right, Council invests in many different planning activities, often with significant resident input and participation. These help to translate our shared vision into concrete actions and strategies
 Feeling safe
Waverley is a fairly safe place to live and visit. However, residents have told us how important feeling safe is for them and Council supports a range of innovative and creative safety initiatives, programs and activities.

Council's vision for a healthy, harmonious and sustainable community:

WAVERLEY will be a place that…

  • Protects and nurtures its distinct identity, sense of community, civic pride and respect for each other and the places where we live, work and play
  • Sustains its community with safe and liveable neighbourhoods, shops, streets and public places that look and feel good and are clean, functional and well maintained
  • Supports itself with accessible and affordable facilities, services and accommodation.
