Researching family history

Looking for a distant relative isn’t always easy. It helps if you have access to a birth, marriage, or death certificate, as the names and dates recorded will usually be accurate. However, even without an official document there are many online resources to help you.

  1. The Ryerson Index is an index listing almost every death notice ever published in newspapers in Australia. Best of all it gives you a “sounds like” option and the date and publication of the notice.
  2. Newspapers.com and Trove provide access to historical newspapers and you may be able to locate burial or funeral notices in local papers such as the Sydney Morning Herald or more general information about a person in other publications.
  3. NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages provide free access to records dating back to 1788 as well as other useful resources.
