This film follows two young music students, Lionel and David, who meet at the Boston Conservatory in 1917. After the war, they embark on a journey through rural Maine to record and preserve authentic Appalachian and American folk songs on wax cylinders. As they document the voices of their countrymen, the two men unexpectedly fall in love. Their passionate but restrained romance eventually faces the realities of their era and the lasting emotional impacts of the war.
