Author Talk: Jane Messer with Raven Mother
Date Date:30 Jun 2026- 30 Jun 2026TimeTime: 6:30pm - 8pmAddressWaverley LibraryRaven mother: war, family and inheritance
In this beautifully written book, part memoir, history and biography, Jane Messer recounts the steps of her Jewish grandmother, Bella.
From pre-war Berlin to Tel Aviv to Melbourne, Messer follows Bella's journey and tries to understand her choices, including why she abandoned her son Michael in England before the war. Along the way, she speaks with historians in Germany, peace activists, scholars and refugees in Israel and Palestine, and, constantly, to her beloved father. Shifting between the personal and the historical with lyrical precision, Raven Mother grapples with the grand scale of global events and the intimate struggles of family and memory.

NAIDOC Week Film: Mabo (2012)
Date Date:10 Jul 2026- 10 Jul 2026TimeTime: 10am - 11:45pmAddressWaverley LibraryNAIDOC Week Film Screening: Mabo (2012) Rated PG CC 105 mins
Directed by Rachel Perkins, Mabo follows the life of Eddie Koiki Mabo, a proud Merriam man from Murray Island (Mer), who discovers that, despite his people living on and cultivating Murray Island for generations, the land legally belongs to the Crown. Refusing to accept this injustice, he embarks on an arduous legal battle to secure native title and to challenge the traditional colonial perception of terra nullius. This legal concept, which considered Australia an empty country prior to white settlement, systematically denied the First Australians the legal and moral rights to their land. Mabo is also a tender love story between Eddie and his wife Bonita, who he meets as a teenager after being exiled to the mainland.
