Waverley Historical Society invites you to it’s latest exhibition, ART DECO & HERITAGE BUILDINGS, INTERWAR & NOW.

When David Hockney died in June of this year, he was described as Britain’s favourite artist, if not the greatest. Although as a young artist he had adopted Los Angeles as his artistic home, creating defining images of its swimming pools, blue skies and tanned bodies, he continued to return and paint his native Yorkshire. These later works replaced the subdued, muted tones normally associated with Britain, with his own intense vision of this landscape.

Ahoy! If you love pirates and mermaids, then you’ll love our special craft and sensory play afternoon. Children will enjoy a range of crafts and tactile activities, perfect for any small pirate or mermaid!

Please note: Parents/carers must stay with their child for the duration of the event.

Ready to start your crochet journey? Then join us for a beginner crochet class where you'll be shown the mindful art of creating granny squares!

The class will provide step-by-step instructions with hands-on assistance and endless encouragement. All equipment (hooks and yarn) will be provided but feel free to bring our own if you'd prefer. You can take home any squares you complete, along with written instructions to help you continue your craft.

Since the late 1800’s granny squares have been the corner stone of crochet creation. The traditional granny square starts at the center and then grows, round by round, until it ends up a square. Constructed of just three stitches, chain stitch, double crochet stitch and slip stitch, the granny square can be made in a large variety of stitch combinations to create different shaped and sized squares.

Locales I Love: Waverley is a participatory stitched memory map bringing together photographs, memories, thoughts, stories and statements from 35 contributors, each reflecting on a location or venue they love within the Waverley LGA.

Join our mindful workshop where you will spend the morning transforming a book cover into a shiny work of art.

Choose from a small selection of donated books or bring your own (works best with no plastic on the cover).

You will not have time to bedazzle the entire cover, therefore, it is recommended not to bring a book with a complex cover.

Please note, this workshop is designed for adults and participants will use small gem pieces to decorate their book.

Love to knit or crochet? Want to create warm wraps to help those in need? Then join our Waverley Library Wrap with Love Group, where you can create 25cm x 25cm squares that are sewn into a wrap to benefit less privileged communities. This relaxed and friendly group is open to all skill levels, and beginners will be provided with basic instructions to start them off on their square journey. Attendees must bring their own supplies, which includes size 4 needles or size 4 crochet hook and 8 ply yarn of any colour.

Digital Know-How is a bimonthly series of skills-based workshops at Waverley Library designed for those interested in learning about how to use everyday technologies. Come join in a judgement-free environment for beginners to practice and improve their confidence.

Join us for the exhibition opening of 1967 Refection, on Thursday, 8 October from 5.30pm to 7pm in Waverley Library's foyer.

1967 was an important year in Australian history and this exhibition will highlight the two major events of that year, the referendum for Aboriginal constitutional representation and the introduction of postcodes.

The exhibition will comprise of photographs with information on the 1967 Referendum, as well as the story of the postal service in the Bondi area, the technical developments that lead to the introduction of postcodes and the consequences for those engaged as workers in mail sorting.

Library Galleries will also feature local artist, Paula Broom, with her exhibition, Locales I Love: Waverley, on display in the atrium and mezzanine.

The exhibition will run until the 29th of October with the opening on Thursday, 8 October 5.30pm - 7pm.
