Joining & borrowing

Joining Waverley Library is easy and free for all Sydney residents. Simply bring along official identification that shows both your name and current address (for example, a drivers license, rates notice or utility bill) and complete a membership form. If you are under 16 a parent or guardian must sign your form. Membership is renewable every three years.

Joining online

If you would like a temporary membership you can join online. A temporary membership number and password will be displayed. This will allow you to immediately reserve items in the library catalogue and get access to our online resources and downloadable eBooks and magazines.

If you are unable to visit the library in person our Home Library Service offers free delivery of personally selected items fortnightly or monthly to housebound residents in the Waverley area. The service is also available for those residents who unable to carry their loans home from the library.

What you can borrow

We know that people love our collection, so we’re generous with our loans

  • Members may borrow up to 30 items for a 3 week period. These include books, CDs, DVDs and magazines.
  • Up to 5 Overdrive eBooks or eAudio books can be downloaded using the Libby app.
  • Unlimited e-magazines are available for your regular enjoyment.
  • Audio-Read Navigators containing audio books are available for vision impaired patrons.
  • iPads available for three week loan period.
  • Up to 6 films for streaming per month using Kanopy.

Borrow your own items through our self-loan kiosks. Our staff members are happy to show you how.

Automatic renewal of items

You no longer need to go onlne to renew your loans or call the library to renew them.
Most items can be borrowed for three weeks and automatically be renewed up to three times provided the item has not been reserved by another member. This does not include special collections such as Quick Picks. iPads can be renewed one time
You can check what items you have on loan and when they are next due back through our Member Services. Please have your card number handy.

Please notify staff of any damage found and any change to your address or contact details.

Returning your items

Charges apply when overdue notices are sent to you, but with our generous renewal options, most people find it easy to return items on time. Please remember that to be fair to all of our members, keeping items overdue may prevent further borrowing.

During opening hours items should be returned via the Returns chute inside the library.
There is also chute available next to the library entrance.

Reservations

If you’ve searched the library’s catalogue and tracked down that item you’ve always been looking for, its best to make sure it is available for you by calling the Library on 9083 8711. We’ll grab it off the shelf and hold it for you for up to two days.

If the item you want is on loan or on the shelf, you can reserve it online or call the library on 9083 8711. A $1 reservation fee will apply and you will be notified by SMS, email or letter when the item is available for pick-up.If you are looking for an item that is not in our collection, we will endeavour to get it from another library for you on inter-library loan
