Community Gardening
Community gardening is a fantastic way to get to know and work with your neighbours, grow your own organic produce and be in touch with the earth. Here are some opportunities for you to be involved in community gardening in your local area.
Waverley Community Garden
Located in Clementson Park, Bondi Junction, the Waverley Community Garden offers individual and group plots to local residents to grow their own organic produce. The garden hosts a number of environmental workshops such as organic gardening, composting and worm farming and bush tucker.
Waverley Park Communal Garden
A local Sustainability Street group have been working with Council on a trial edible garden in Waverley Park. In May 2011, the group installed four raised garden beds. Visit the Waverley Park Communal Garden here.
241 Bondi Road Community Garden
An initiative of the local Transition Bondi Group, local residents have set up a community garden at 241 Bondi Road (near Boonara Ave). The group have community gardens at the front and the rear of this block of units and run working bees every Saturday between 10-12noon (Summer - Autumn). Greening Waverley
The Pocket Parks Program
Residents can come together and care for small areas of open space.
The Footpath Gardens Program
Residents are encouraged to establish a garden on their nature strip.
The 'Adopt A Tree' Program
Residents are encouraged, as individuals or groups, to adopt and care for single or multiple newly planted street trees, after having a say in the species selection.
The Bushcare Program
There are currently six bushcare groups operating in the Waverley area. They combine Council resources, community volunteers and trained bush regenerators to restore, protect and enhance areas of remnant bushland.
Bondi Public School
The school is looking for volunteers to help with the care of their newly established Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden.
Propose something!
Council will also consider proposals for small community (vegetable) gardens that can be adminsitered through its Pocket Parks or Footpath Garden programs.
