23 Oct 2019: Protecting Waverley from over development

23 October 2019

At the Council Meeting held 10 October, I moved two Mayoral Motions which were both adopted.

The first motion involves requesting the Minister for Planning and Public Places to prepare a State Environment Planning Policy (SEPP) to protect Centennial Park from future development which could adversely affect its aesthetic and heritage significance. We will also be seeking support from Woollahra, City of Sydney and Randwick City councils to urge the Minister to prepare such a SEPP.

The second motion seeks advice from a Senior Counsel to determine if grounds exist to appeal the gazettal of the planning proposal for 194 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction. The the state government approved the proposal which Council has been fighting since 2013. Council twice refused the proposal on the basis that the development is excessively large, will result in overdevelopment of the site, may set a precedent for adjoining sites seeking additional height and floor space and is not in the public interest.
