- Permanent footpath now open through Bronte Cutting
Permanent footpath now open through Bronte Cutting
28 September 2021
Waverley Council has completed its safety upgrade of Bronte Cutting including a permanent continuous footpath through Calga Place and up to Macpherson Street, Bronte.
The permanent footpath was installed to improve pedestrian safety and experience through the cutting which forms part of the famed Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk.
The walk attracts around one million walkers each year and during peak times, as many as 500 pedestrians per hour use Bronte Cutting. The popularity of the walk resulted in the need to review some of the existing ‘weak spots’ for pedestrians – most notably the almost 130-metre stretch of Calga Place without a footpath.
Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos (pictured at the Cutting) said Council’s safety and upgrade works will make it easier for people and cars to move about safely, and has further beautified the streetscape.
“The days of pedestrians needing to walk out on a road, shared with vehicles accessing beach parking are over,” Mayor Masselos said.
“It’s a credit to Council’s Major Projects team and our contractor QMC for completing the remainder of these works in such a timely manner during lockdown.”
The upgrade of Calga Place also includes:
- installation of new bins, speed humps and signage
- landscaping
- upgrading stormwater drains
- re-sheeting and line-marking the road.
This project is proudly funded by Waverley Council and the NSW and Federal Governments.
The extended footpath to Macpherson Street will not reduce the existing number of parking spaces. One Bronte Surf Life Saving Club parking spot has been turned into motorcycle parking to create space for the footpath, as agreed by the Club.
