Waverley Council has lodged its development application for the restoration of the iconic Bondi Pavilion.
The DA is open for public and stakeholder input. A period of 28 days is set aside for this next phase of community consultation.
The public can view the DA documentation online via the DA Tracker: https://eservices.waverley.nsw.gov.au/Pages/XC.Track/SearchApplication.aspx. The reference number is DA-105/2019.
Waverley Mayor, John Wakefield, said the detail designs have been guided by the Bondi Pavilion Conservation Management Plan and extensive community feedback.
“The community told us they wanted Council to retain, restore and conserve the heritage of the building and improve its functionality – and we listened,” Mayor Wakefield said.
“Architects TZG have worked hard to weave the Pavilion’s history into any new aspects of the design, including the colonnades on the internal courtyards, the ground treatment in the courtyards and by making the atrium space a focal point for users.”
The key features of the Pavilion Restoration include:
- Replacing the roof tiles with those similar to the original terracotta tiles
- Removing the modern addition of the glass bubble to restore the original symmetry of the building
- Additional amenities on the Northern Courtyard, accessible from the internal courtyard and the walkway between the Pavilion and the Surf Lifesaving Club
- A tourism office
- A Bondi Story Room, a flexible cultural space for exhibitions and alike
- Flexible commercial space, with the capacity for larger tenancies along the front of the Pavilion
- Improved community facilities for everyone to enjoy.
The DA will be assessed by independent assessment officers, heritage consultants and the Office of Environment and Heritage. This process is likely to take at least six months.
