Jazz @ The Pav comes to Bondi this Autumn

The contemporary sounds of jazz will flood Bondi’s Pavilion Theatre this March with Waverley Council’s Jazz @ The Pav festival.
Building on a long history of jazz in Bondi, Jazz @ The Pav will be a month long celebration of jazz music featuring a star studded line-up of Sydney’s finest musicians including Matt McMahon Trio featuring Virna Sanzone, Sirens Big Band,The catholics and the Greasy Chicken Orchestra.
While the main action will take place in Bondi Pavilion Theatre, a free outdoor performance by Bondi Brass on Sunday 19 March will bring the festivities onto the shores of Bondi Beach for all to enjoy.
On International Women’s Day, Wednesday 8 March, there will be a performance from all female group Sirens Big Band. The big band was formed as a direct response to the under representation of women in the jazz music community and brings together some of Australia’s best young female jazz musicians.
Mayor of Waverley, Sally Betts said, “Jazz @ The Pav will be the perfect way to spend a relaxed Autumn evening. Visitors can catch up with friends, have a drink and listen to some fine jazz music.
“Whether you’re new to jazz or a jazz aficionado, there will be music for everyone to enjoy.”

Be prepared for fireworks as one of Australia’s most distinguished jazz artists, Virna Sanzone teams up with award winning pianist and composer Matt McMahon and his trio to breathe new life into anything and everything they perform.
Wednesday 8 March, International Women’sDay
Sirens Big Band with Sandy Evans
Formed as a direct response to the under representation of women in the jazz music community, the band brings together some of Australia’s strongest and most innovative young female jazz musicians. With past performances at Brisbane Festival, Manly Jazz Festival and opening the Darling Harbour Jazz and Blues Festival, Sirens Big Band has built a reputation as a big band that you won’t want to miss.

The Catholics
This Mo Award-winning, ARIA nominated seven-piece ensemble is one of Australian’s most popular jazz acts. Throughout their beautifully crafted and instantly accessible pieces runs a strong, seductive dance strain found in the band’s various African, Caribbean, Latin and Eastern influences.
Sunday 19 March
Bondi Brass, 11am
Enjoy fine jazz musicand spectacular views of Bondi Beach when Bondi Brass takes to the stage outside the Pavilion. Bondi Brass’ repertoire knows no bounds, from the renaissance dances of Tilman Susato to the music of modern Australian composers such as George Dreyfus, David Stanhope and Barry McKimm. Free event.

Greasy Chicken Orchestra
The Greasy Chicken Orchestra brings their brand of swinging 20s/30s jazz to the Pavilion, featuring some of Sydney’s finest musicians as they celebrate the music of New Orleans and beyond. With a focus on early Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton, tunes will include early jazz classics as South Rampart Street Parade, Muskrat Ramble and Froggie Moore Rag.
