Improving pedestrian safety in Bronte Cutting

A pedestrian walkway linking Calga Reserve and the Coastal Walk through Bronte Cutting is due for completion in mid-November.

Waverley Council temporarily removed 20 car spaces and some parking meters on the left-hand side of Bronte Cutting to connect the missing link in the existing footpath as part of a pilot project the Council is trailing to improve pedestrian safety.

The missing link in the existing footpath means that during peak times, as many as 500 pedestrians per hour are forced to walk along the road creating a conflict between pedestrians and vehicles.

The trial will be open soon for community feedback at haveyoursay.waverley.nsw.gov.au, and people will be invited to provide feedback about their preferred solution for a future permanent pedestrian link through the cutting.

Waverley Mayor, John Wakefield, said the safety of the more than one million pedestrians who access the Coastal Walk through Bronte Cutting each year is Council’s top priority.

“Calga Place, otherwise known as Bronte Cutting, is a state road with a 40 km/h speed limit and up until now, has included a large section without a footpath,” Mayor Wakefield said.

“The aim of the Bronte Cutting Pedestrian Link pilot project is to enhance the unique character of the Coastal Walk and to establish a seamless pedestrian connection in Bronte Cutting.

“On a typical off-peak weekend, around 5500 pedestrians a day walk through the Cutting compared to 585 cars- a ratio of nearly 10:1.”

The community will be invited to provide feedback about a number of permanent options including making Bronte Cutting a shared road with a 10 km/h speed limit and/or building a footpath.

Roads and Maritime Services recently reduced the speed limit in Bronte Cutting from 50 km/h to 40km/h.

Council will also be holding onsite surveys with pedestrians and motorists.
