A NSW first for electric vehicle owners

Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick councils have joined forces to become the first councils in NSW to provide subsidised on-street public charge stations for electric vehicles.

The three Councils have signed a joint agreement with electric vehicle charging provider JET Charge to install on-street charge stations in six key locations in Sydney’s east by mid next year.

Charge stations will be located at:

  • Queen Elizabeth Drive, Bondi Beach
  • Spring Street, Bondi Junction
  • Kiaora Place shopping centre, Double Bay
  • Coogee Beach (Brooke Street next to Coogee Oval)
  • Randwick Community Centre
  • Silver Street car park, Randwick.

Tri-Council spokesperson, Anthony Weinberg, said the project is part of the three Councils’ plans to reduce carbon emissions in Sydney’s east and offer innovative ‘smart city’ solutions.

“One of the major barriers to the uptake of electric vehicles in Sydney is the lack of access to charging infrastructure,” Mr Weinberg said.

“This tri-Council project aims to help address this issue, making the eastern suburbs electric vehicle-ready and support the transition to zero emissions vehicle transport.

“As part of our commitment to sustainability, the charge stations will be powered by 100% renewable energy.

“We will continue to support and facilitate use of other low-emissions sustainable transport including walking, cycling, public transport and car-sharing.”

JET Charge Director, Tim Washington, said the company was excited to be working with Randwick, Woollhara and Waverley Councils on this high profile project.

"By installing charging infrastructure in high profile locations, the 3 Councils are sharing a vision for the future where fuelling your vehicle fits into your lifestyle, not the other way around,” Mr Washington said.

The charge stations will provide open source level 2 AC charge which is suitable for all makes and models of electric vehicles.

Users will pay using the Chargefox app which will show the availability of each charge station.

“This project has been more than two years in the making and has never been done before,” Mr Weinberg said.

“We will monitor use of the charge stations as well as customer feedback as part of any potential expansion at current or to new sites.”
