Festival of the Winds


Champion kite flyers, a 1950’s themed Bar by the Sydney City Roosters, song and dance, and food from around the globe – just some of the exciting attractions at the 38th Festival of the Winds, at Bondi Beach, Sunday 11 September 11am to 4pm.

Waverley Council is delighted to bring you the Festival of the Winds, Sydney’s most colourful spring festival.

We bring the exciting event to you in partnership with the East Leagues Sydney Roosters and Australian Kiteflyers Society (AKS), our major sponsors of the day.

The festival this year will include some new highlights, including the East Sydney Roosters 1950’s bar in Bondi Pavilion commemorating the East Leagues first club premises.

The Australian Kiteflyers Society will once more be bringing champion kite flyers from England, New Zealand, Germany and across Australia to Bondi Beach.

Kids will be entertained with free face painting, a puppetshow, jumping castle and craft making at the Kids Zone at the Bondi Pavilion Courtyard.

Enjoy cuisine from around the world and song and dance from Thailand, Indonesia, Cook Islands, Africa, England and more.

The Bondi Pavilion Gallery will present a new exhibition, Beach Couture, a Haute Mess, by local Bondi artist Marina DeBris.

An array of activities will take place at Bondi Park including kite making and flying workshops, a paper plane making and flying competition, wind powered sustainability demonstrations and acrobatics every 15 minutes.

Mayor Sally Betts said she was looking forward to watching the amazing kite-flyers and enjoying a wide range of activities including song and dance, aerobic acrobats and festival foods.

This year’s event will include a few notable highlights detailed below:


Professional Kite Flyers

Professional champion kite-flyers from around the world will be sponsored by the Australian Kite Flying Society to display their incredible skills and kite constructions on the beach. On show this year will be Volker Hoberg from Germany, Carl Robertshaw from England, David Ellison from England, Craig Hansen and Perrin Melchior from New Zealand and Jo and Ricky Baker from Victoria.

Easts Festival Bar

The Easts Festival Bar on the balcony at Bondi Pavilion will provide an opportunity to step back in time to the Sydney Rooster’s first home in the 1950’s. Enjoy a flying rooster cocktail or explore the interesting memorabilia and vintage outfits.

Song and Dance on the Festival Stage

The Festival Stage will be a hive of activity with dancing acts from around the world including Sri Lankan, Indigenous Australian, Chinese Dragon Dance, Indonesian, Maori, Cook Islands, African and English.

Foods from around the world

A variety of foods from cultures all around the globe will be available. Enjoy cuisine from the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy, India, Spain, Turkey, Brazil, Australia, China and Malaysia, as well as vegan options.

High Flying Acrobatics

Aerial acrobat performances by some of Australia’s finest aerialists, Aerialize performance troupe will perform in Bondi Park every 15 minutes. Aerialize is Sydney’s leading aerial and circus arts training centre and performance company.

Art Gallery and roaming models

The Bondi pavilion Art Gallery will feature internationally renowned Bronte resident Marina DeBris’s newest series Beach Couture, a Haute Mess. Models wearing artwork, created by DeBris will be seen strutting across the festival.

Kids Activities

There will be no shortage of activities for the kids to enjoy, from face-painters to farm yard animals, a jumping castle and tumble town, murphy’s puppets, drawing activities with renowned artist Philip Einfeld, Girl Guides stories, story-telling, Wind over the Ocean with Phillip and kite-making.
