Discover the sounds of Waverley on Make Music Day
06 June 2023 | Media Release
Monday 5 June
Make Music Day is an international celebration of music in all its forms, encouraging both amateur and professional music-making.
The Council holds free Make Music Day events each year including outdoor performances at Bondi Junction and supports homegrown musical talent through initiatives such as the Bondi WAVE youth band song-writing program and our Sunshine Singers group.
Please join us for the following Make Music Day events:
11am – 1pm Pop Up Musicians in Bondi Junction.
Come on down to Oxford St Mall and Bronte Rd (outside Westfield) between 11am to 1pm to hear some amazing singers fill Bondi Junction with song. Amazing artists Maxi Signori and Brendan Gallagherwill delight with renditions of your favourite tunes.
1.30pm – 2.30pm Classic Hits Concert in the High Tide Room Bondi Pavilion
Classic Hits is a monthly concert series delivered free to the community in the High Tide Room by Waverley Council. This month we celebrate Make Music Day with Greg Poppleton (pictured- above). Greg is an authentic 1920s-30s singer loved by many around Australia, with 1.3 million total YouTube views and 8 albums. His vocals perfectly capture the roaring 20s and 30s and will have you transported to a vintage past with songs from Armstrong, Ellington and Billie Holiday. Whether on his award-winning Phantom Dancer radio show, on stage at Sydney Festival, or his appearance in the movies with Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge!), Greg Poppleton is no to be missed.

3pm – 6pm Community Music in the High Tide Room Bondi Pavilion
After the Classic Hits concert, come and join our local community of performers including Waverley’s own Sunshine Singers choir and Bondi WAVE rock bands, as they take over the stage to fill the afternoon with music.
6.45pm – 7.10pm Artist talk with Lisa Oduor-Noah and Miriam Lieberman in the Bondi Pavilion Theatre
Join famed Kenyan singer-songwriter, arranger and producer Lisa Oduor-Noah and local artist Miriam Lieberman (pictured- above) as they share their insights about their journeys in music in a free and intimate artist talk at Bondi Pavilion theatre. Oduor-Noah is a true musical shape shifter with undeniable presence and an intoxicating voice performing soulful jazz pop originals with her dynamic band. A Berklee College of Music graduate who tours around the world inspired by her cultural roots, Oduor-Noah hopes to be an agent of hope, healing, and connection through her music. Oduor-Noah has collaborated with several well-known African artists including Blinky Bill, Kato Change, June Gachui and Sauti Sol and performed at the Global Citizen Festival last year in New York’s Central Park, the Shanghai Jazz Festival and Coke Studio Africa. Local musician Miriam Lieberman’s songs are soulful collections of stories beautifully told through kora (West African harp), guitar and her unmistakable voice. Lieberman's musical style is inspired by her transformational time studying music in Latin America & West Africa.

To keep the celebrations going, the Council is holding an additional event—Music Night @ the Pav — on June 21 with Oduor-Noah and Lierberman in concert at the Pavilion following their free artist talk.
Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, said music transcends cultural and linguistic barriers and has the power to bring people together.
“We are delighted to host Greg Poppleton, Lisa Oduor-Noah and Miriam Lieberman at Bondi Pavilion and provide a platform for our local musicians to showcase their talents and create community connections through music,” Mayor Masselos said.
Bondi Pavilion Artistic Director, Chris Bendall, said Make Music Day and Music Night @ the Pav is a great way to introduce the community to new sounds and genres, with a focus this year on women artists in the world music field.
“Music is a universal language through which we celebrate diversity and find common ground through a shared love of music and storytelling,” Mr Bendall said.
