Colette Johnson - Save Our Beach (1988 – 1991)
“Do what you want to do. Be what you want to be. Yeah!”
Running for Save Our Beach (SOB) which was an independant party opposed to overdevelopment, Colette became Waverley Councillor in 1988. Born and raised in Waverley and Randwick, Colette also raised a family in the area prior to joining council.
Save Our Beach was committed to preserving Bondi Beach and adjacent Campbell Parade, advocating for heritage and environmental values. This was during a period in which plans to develop Bondi Beach and the surrounding area sparked fears that Bondi Beach would become ‘Camelot by the Sea’ or similar to the Gold Coast. Colette’s generation of Council succesfully implemented increased development controls, heritage guidelines and an increased environmental focus which prevented such changes to the area being implemented.
