Bronte

Bronte is an established residential area. The Bronte Precinct is bounded by Birrell Street, the Pacific Ocean, Bronte Gully and Brown Street. Please note boundary lines run through the middle of the street. Bronte Precinct is part of Waverley Ward.

Bronte is named after an early property in the area, which was named after a town in Sicily. It was originally known as Nelson Bay.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s, when the first land grants were made. Population was minimal until the late 1800s, with growth from the 1880s into the early 1900s. Expansion continued during the immediate post-war years. The population declined slightly from the mid 1990s.

Major features of the area include Bronte Park, Bronte Beach, the Eastern Beaches Coastal Walk, Bronte Baths, Bronte House and a number of schools.
