Gertrude is Marie Widolf’s quirky girl-next-door cartoon-character, who first made her appearance on social media in 2015. Gertrude dreams of one day becoming a great chef – but there is only one little problem: she can’t cook. With a tendency to daydream and misplacing her cookbook, Gertrude tries to “figure it all out” on the chopping board and in the mixing bowl.

Gertrude’s Kitchen Mayhem is Marie’s fourth solo exhibition, which follows her cartoon-character’s culinary journey. We find that this time her cooking ingredients have “come alive” and take on human characteristics, and a more protagonist animated form. The potatoes refuse to be tossed into Gertrude’s stew, while the aubergines protest over being served with her hot Chili Sauce! The veggies join her in dancing the Kitchen Polka; and her pink and green Dragon Fruit takes her on a magic flight amongst the silvery clouds!

This March, Marie proudly presents twenty mixed-media artworks from Gertrude’s wacky, quirky and whimsical kitchen-world, at the Waverley Library Galleries in Bondi Junction.
