Celebrated every year on 21 June, Make Music Day is dedicated to music and was first celebrated as a national musical holiday in France as Fête de la Musique in 1982. It was initiated by the country’s former minister of art and culture, Jack Lange, who came up with the idea with French journalist, music composer, and radio producer Maurice Fleuret who decided on celebrating it every year on the Summer Solstice (June 21st). Today, Make Music Day is a global day of music making in more than 1000 cities across 120 countries.

An international celebration of music in all its forms, Waverley Council holds Make Music Day events each year and we are planning some fantastic free events for 2023. Why not join the global celebration and come out to see some music performances for free!

11am – 1pm Pop Up Musicians in Bondi Junction.

Come on down to Oxford St Mall and Bronte Rd (outside Westfield) between 11am to 1pm to hear some amazing singers fill Bondi Junction with song. Amazing artists Maxi Signori and Brendan Gallagher will delight with renditions of your favourite tunes.

6.45pm – 7.10pm Artist talk with Lisa Oduor-Noah and Miriam Lieberman in the Bondi Pavilion Theatre

A talk with two talented women who will share their musical journeys, inspirations, and cultural influences as singer/songwriters. Currently touring internationally, Kenyan singer-songwriter and producer Lisa Oduor-Noah will be in conversation with local folk songstress and kora player, Miriam Lieberman.

Oduor-Noah is a true musical shape shifter with undeniable presence and an intoxicating voice performing soulful jazz pop originals with her dynamic band. A Berklee College of Music graduate who tours around the world inspired by her cultural roots, Oduor-Noah hopes to be an agent of hope, healing, and connection through her music.  Oduor-Noah has collaborated with several well-known African artists including Blinky Bill, Kato Change, June Gachui and Sauti Sol and performed at the Global Citizen Festival last year in New York’s Central Park, the Shanghai Jazz Festival and Coke Studio Africa.
Local musician Miriam Lieberman’s songs are soulful collections of stories beautifully told through kora (West African harp), guitar and her unmistakable voice. Lieberman's musical style is inspired by her transformational time studying music in Latin America & West Africa.
