Details

What begins as textile becomes talisman in Curtain Call. Cloth unfolds into choreography, transforming the gallery into a suspended space charged with the tension between control and surrender, stillness and ecstatic release. Set within the layered architecture of Bondi Pavilion, a site shaped by communal gathering and cultural passage, Curtain Call channels the rhythm of rituals once danced to heal, to purge, to endure.

As with much of Lauren Brincat’s work, these pieces are in waiting. They carry the potential for movement, for touch; they hover somewhere between set and costume, suspended in a state of readiness, as though a gesture may begin at any moment. Developed in part during a residency at Art Omi in New York, the textile forms embody both personal and collective memory. Each fold, each knot, carries the trace of a legacy passed down through generations.

Lauren Brincat works with performance, video, installation, and sculpture to explore movement, music, and rhythm. Her practice is often site-responsive, probing historical ruptures and the failures of language while integrating local communities. Her use of fabric operates as a metaphor for social cohesion, what she describes as a kind of "social fabric", experimenting with its interaction with the body, space, and gender.

Curtain Call continues until 15 February 2026.
