Yellow lid recycling bin

Waverley Council offers fortnightly collection of residential yellow lid recycling bins (alternate week to your blue lid recycling bin). Find your collection day here.

What can go in the yellow lid recycling bin?

Your yellow lid bin is for loose container recyclables, including:

  • aluminum and steel cans
  • glass bottles and jars
  • plastic bottles and containers
  • aerosols (empty)
  • clean aluminium foil (collect in a fist sized ball) and trays

What cannot go in the yellow lid recycling bin?

Putting the wrong items in your yellow lid bin can result in the bin contents going to landfill instead of being recycled. Do not put the following items into your yellow lid recycling bin:

  • plastic bags and soft plastics
  • takeaway coffee cups (place in red bin)
  • paper based milk or juice cartons (place in blue lid recycling bin)
  • aseptic food cartons (i.e. long life milk cartons)
  • nappies
  • food scraps
  • polystyrene
  • broken crockery or drinking glasses
  • light globes
  • batteries
  • textiles and clothing

Once collected, items from your yellow bin are sorted at a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), squashed into large bales and resold to be reprocessed into new items depending on market demand for the material.

Houses and terraces are entitled to one yellow 140 L recycling bin. The number of yellow 240L recycling bins allocated to apartment buildings (3 or more dwellings) is calculated using the waste generation rates in Council’s Developmental Control Plan 2012 which can be viewed here.
