Solar my Strata
In 2020/21, Waverley Council piloted a Solar my Strata program to test ways to assist small strata buildings (2-40 lots) identify and implement viable rooftop solar power solutions, with independent advice and support.
The program offered:
- Free expert solar feasibility assessment and report
- Assistance to seek and compare quotes on suitable system/s (by a consultant)
- Financial incentive towards cost of system ($200/kW capped at $2000)
- Presentations to Strata Committees/Strata stakeholders and advice throughout
- Access to templates required for decision-making e.g. Solar By-Law, Special Resolutions
- Capacity-building, educational and networking opportunities for tenants/owners
Outcomes
- Eight strata buildings participated and one installed Solar Power for individual lot use with environmental benefit a strong driver in these decisions
- A further two buildings are considering whether to proceed with a Solar power installation
- High up-front costs and strata decision making challenges were two key barriers to progressing solar projects
- Council is now exploring other cost-effective ways to support rooftop solar for suitable buildings as well as options/models to provide access to renewable electricity for apartments, combined with energy efficiency education.
