Volunteering
More than 6 million Australians volunteer each year – and are themselves happier and healthier as a result. Research tells us that just a few hours of volunteer work makes a difference in people’s happiness.
Volunteering is a great way to connect with other people in Waverley and can lead to new experiences, skill development and an increased sense of wellbeing.
Interested in joining one of our volunteering programs or membership groups?

Volunteer programs
Membership program
- Environmental Sustainability
Second Nature is a community program to make sustainability second nature in Sydney's eastern suburbs. People who live/work locally can sign up online to access resources and receive updates and tips. They can also pledge an action to make positive changes in the local community. Volunteers might be needed to assist with events, program development and environmental engagement activities.
- Community & Seniors Centre
Waverley Community and Seniors Centre is a great place to get fit, meet people and to participate in community life. Volunteers assist with craft, exercise and other activities or just help out with morning tea.
- Bushcare
The Waverley Bushcare team aims to continue to improve the quality of bushland areas, to maintain a healthy coast and provide habitat for the local wildlife. Volunteers assist with such roles as planting, weeding and mulching usually on a monthly basis at one of the six sites across the LGA.
- Urban Gardening
A well-maintained street or verge garden can help reduce lawn moving, provide habitat for birds and help to make your home and street look fantastic. Individual residents or neighbourhood groups maintain these gardens in public spaces enlivening a sense of community.
- Community Living Program
The Waverley Community Living Program provides services to support adults with an intellectual disability to live fulfilling and independent lives. This includes: skills development and training; independent living skills; accommodation and tenancy management; and social and recreational activities. Volunteers assist with these programs and events.
- Waverley Library
Waverley Library has a range of volunteering opportunities available from Tech Help, Local Studies and General Library assistance. We also accept students completing community service as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
- Children & Family Services
Waverley Council has four Early Education Centres and one Family Day Care service providing high-quality early education and care programs. Volunteer roles include assistance with programs, such as story time, gardening, art and play-based learning.
- Cultural Programs & Events
Waverley is at the heart of arts and culture in the eastern suburbs with theatre, music, markets, galleries, studios, talks, festivals and events scheduled throughout the year in various sites across the LGA. Volunteers support annual events within this program.
- Neighbourhood Placemaking Projects
Community-led placemakaing and neighbourhood improvement projects harness the creativity and energy of residents to transform neglected areas through quick, short-term and low-cost initiatives. Types of projects include: shared gardens, murals and community art projects, street libraries, urban games and craft projects, community celebration and village projects.
- Waverley & South Head Cemetery
Waverley and South Head Cemeteries are heritage listed iconic sites in Sydney's eastern suburbs. Volunteering roles include gardening and maintenance of these spectacular sites..
- Waverley Community Garden
Located next to Clemston Park off Ebley Street in Bondi Junction, the garden offers individual and group plots for local residents to grow their own organic produce. The garden hosts environmental workshops such as: organic gardening, composting, worm farming and bush tucker, and the team regularly comes together for monthly working bees.
- Friends of Waverley Library
The Friends of Waverley Library group support library services, events and special projects.
- Waverley Historical Society
The Waverley Historical Society facilitates historical talks, walks and research in the Waverley LGA.
- Friends of Waverley Cemetery
History buffs, genealogists and social historians will love raising community awareness about Waverley Cemetary's incredible history. Volunteers within the group facilitate tours of the cemetery, undertake research and writing activities and raise funds for monumental restoration. A number of members are currently involved in photographing every monument and inscription on those monuments throughout Waverley and South Head Cemeteries for inclusion on the cemetry's database.
- Community Justice of the Peace
Waverley Council offers a Justice of the Peace service which operates from the Customer Service Centre on Spring St, Bondi Junction on weekdays and Waverley Library on Saturdays. Volunteers need to be registered Justice of the Peace and a member of the NSW Justices Association.
