Lawson Ward

Rose Jackson

Rose Jackson

Hi, my name is Rose Jackson and I am the Labor Councillor for Lawson Ward, Waverley Council. The ward includes Bondi Junction, Queens Park, and parts of Waverley and Bronte.

I am a proud graduate of the primary and secondary public education system. I have a degree in economic and social sciences from the University of Sydney and am a former President of the University of Sydney Students’ Representative Council and President of the National Union of Students.

I have lived in the eastern suburbs my entire life, and been involved in numerous community campaigns opposing over-developments that don’t fit our local area. I am also the Vice-President of the Eastern Suburbs Community College, working to increase the quality of adult education in our community. My passion for education has also led to me to work part-time for NSW Minister for Education Verity Firth MP.

My priorities for Waverley Council include protecting the unique natural environment of our community, ensuring Council gets the basics right (including clean streets and footpaths, as well as fair parking policies), being a strong voice against over-development (including protecting Bondi Junction residents from antisocial behaviour, noise and pollution from big pubs) and having a positive vision for the future of Waverley.

I hope to be a hard-working, passionate, accountable and accessible local representative so please feel free to contact me about any local issues.

Kerryn Sloan

Kerryn Sloan

Waverley Councillor since 1999. Deputy Mayor, 2009, 2010 & 2012.

Kerryn graduated from the Institute of Design in Sydney in the early 90’s, where she studied building design and interiors for five years. Prior to this she graduated from Southern Cross University with a Graduate Diploma in Adult Education Training and Development. She also attended Macquarie University to complete part of a Masters in Workplace Competencies. Her first tertiary studies were completed at The Guild Teachers College, where she graduated, as a teacher.

Councillor Sloan has chaired the Finance Committee from, 2009 to 2011. She also continues to chair the Public Art Committee, which she has done for the last eight years. Recently she had a new sculpture, Life Teaming - Life teeming, by Terence Plowright, installed in Eora Park. This has taken numerous years. Kerryn is also a member of the Development Control Committee, as well as the Bondi Junction Committee, and numerous other committees that relate to delivering better services to the Waverley Community.

Kerryn has been an Eastern Suburbs resident for over 28 years.

She is extremely focused on delivering better developments for higher standards of sustainable development. This is due in part to her experience in running her own company in building design and management.

Kerryn has also worked in various fields such as secondary and tertiary education, primarily as a resource development professional. In addition, to working with the gifted and talented young women, through the design of educational systems of delivery, she has also been employed by companies to develop human resources for the implementation of procedural systems.

Councillor Sloan is a strong campaigner for changing the laws regarding smoking. She has successfully put anti–smoking issues on the agenda for Local Government. As a result, there will be no smoking in outdoor cafe seating on Council-owned land as café seating leases come before council for renewal.

Kerryn introduced the concept of public art as mandatory obligation for commercial developments. Developers must now provide substantial works of art to beautify our commercial centre. Many such works are just now coming to fruition.

Previously Kerryn effectively closed 31 illegal brothel rooms within Bondi Junction.

In 2003 she was appointed the Eastern Suburbs nominee on the plan of management for Kingsford Smith Airport. It is ironic that she finds herself returning to the issue that brought her into government, as the Federal Government seek to fly more planes over Waverley.

Passions and policy interests continue to include the built environment, architectural design, art in the environment, and noise abatement. As a national initiative she spearheaded the rewriting the Building Code Australia so as to upgrade noise abatement in apartment blocks. Of late she is most focused on a sustainable population. If in her words we can achieve this, we can conserve our planet. Also installing a conservation marine centre to outlaw spear fishing in coastal waters.

Last year In October, Kerryn moved a motion at the annual Local Government Conference, which was unanimously supported, to have ceiling and wall insulation installers trained, tested and certified. Councillor Sloan hopes to ensure that no future deaths or injuries occur as a result of lack of training and certification.

And almost top of the list is job share, so that women and men alike can more actively participate in both a family and working life.
