  • Waverley Artist Studios Present: The Return thumbnail Waverley Artist Studios Present: The Return 06/10/2017 to 29/10/2017

    The Return considers the idea of recurrence, the cyclical nature of the world and our existence itself.

    The exhibition contains three highly celebrated contemporary artists: Fiona Lowry, Todd McMillan and Greg Semu, who are all alumni of the Waverley Artist Studios. The Waverley Artist Studios is a program which supports emerging and professional artists through fully subsidised studio space to develop new work.

    Adding to the theme of returning, is the selection of artists Fiona Lowry and Todd McMillan, who were both apart of the inaugural year of the Waverley Artist Studios in 2010. In its time since, the studios have hosted 50 artists resulting in numerous artworks, exhibitions and community workshops. The Return is the second in a series of exhibitions that have been curated out of the studio program in the Bondi Pavilion Gallery exhibition program to give the community the opportunity to enjoy the work produced by resident artists.

    When: 6 - 29 October 2017

    Do you enjoy the coastal walk from Bondi to Bronte and marvel at the monuments in Waverley Cemetery and wonder who is buried there? Why not book a walking tour, led by Friends of Waverley Cemetery Volunteers?

    The cemetery is the resting place of many famous an infamous people including test cricketers, politicians, murder victims, authors, poets and criminals!

    Date: Every Saturday

    Time: 9am - 10.30am

    Location: Attendees are to meet at the Cemetery Office  Entry Porch, via Trafalgar Street, Bronte.

    Cost: $24.18 per person.

    *Monies raised by the Friends of Waverley Cemetery Volunteer Tour Guides is used for memorial restoration work.

    Additional Information:  Attendees should wear comfortable walking shoes, carry water and slip, slop, slap. 
    Refunds are not available however rescheduling can be arranged. 
    Due to the location of the Cemetery and the walking involved, this tour is not suitable for young children or persons with mobility issues.

    Who will keep an eye on those who manipulate the media?

    And how can we avoid the onslaught of fraudulent facts, hoax headlines and malicious media?

    Featuring an expert panel of journalists including John Barron (host of The Drum and Planet America on ABC TV), Sandra Sully (Senior Editor and host of TEN Eyewitness News) and Alex McKinnon (Editor of Schwartz Media's The Briefing) and hosted by journalist Jan Fran (host of The Feed, SBS TV).

    BURNING MAN (2011) with guest speaker writer/director Jonathan Teplitzky

    From Burning Man to The Railway Man - a local to an international film directing career and working across different industries

    Burning Man tells the story of Tom, a British chef in a Bondi restaurant, who after the death of his wife, lives recklessly and angrily in his grief. His son, Oscar is left as a casualty of his mother’s death and his father’s irresponsible behaviour. This is a film about friends, family and a man himself trying to piece life back together after grief.

    Cast includes: Essie Davis, Rachel Griffiths, Kerry Fox, Gia Carides, Marta Dusseldorf

    Jonathan Teplitzky is an Australian writer and film director whose works include Better than Sex (2000), Gettin' Square (2003), Burning Man (2011) The Railway Man (2013) with Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth and Churchill (2017).  Jonathan has won a BAFTA in 1993.

    Jonathan wrote and directed Burning Man while living in Bondi and will join us via skype from London where he now resides.

    See the spectacular Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk transformed into a 2km long temporary sculpture park featuring over 100 sculptures by artists from Australia and across the world.

    Travelling by bike

    You can ride a bike to and from the event. There is free bike parking available at  both Tamarama and Marks Park. These bike parking areas are for parking your own bike, or you can rent a dockless share bike and ride it one way then walk or catch the bus back again. Please note that bikes are not to be parked within the event area (shown on the map). You can download the map here.

    THE ROCKET (2013) with guest speakers writer/director Kim Mordaunt and Producer Silvya Wilczynski

    Making films for international audiences and shooting in overseas locations.

    The Rocket is an Australian drama film set entirely in Northern Laos, and spoken in Lao language. It follows the story of a boy who is believed to bring bad luck to everyone around him. After a calamity-filled journey through a land scarred by the legacy of war, to prove he's not bad luck, he builds a giant rocket to enter the most exciting and dangerous competition of the year: the Rocket Festival.

    As an Australian production, it was the country’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards. The Rocket won 3 awards at the Berlin Film Festival including Best Debut Feature & the Crystal Bear; Best Narrative Feature , Best Actor and the Audience Award at Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Film Festival, the Audience Award at both Sydney and Melbourne Film Festivals and Best Director at the Australian Director’s Guild Awards.

    The producing/writing/directing team of Sylvia Wilczynsk and Kim Mordaunt have made'The Rocket' (2013), ABC TV documentary 'Bomb Harvest' (2007) which sold to over 40 countries and are in development for 'One Crowded Hour', a drama film based on the life story of legendary Australian war cameraman, Neil Davis. They are currently preparing for their next film, a soon-to-be announced political thriller/adventure, which will shoot early next year in Australia and Southeast Asia.

    Join Sarah the Psychic for a workshop on how to read tarot cards in celebration of Halloween.
    ‘Intuitive Tarot with Psychic Sarah’ is for anyone who wants to learn how to do a basic tarot reading without any prior knowledge of the cards.

    In this workshop you will go through the Major Arcana (22 tarot cards), using exercises to get an instant feel for their meanings.
    By the end of the class you will do a simple three card spread using the skills you have learned. From there, anything is possible!
    Feel free to bring your own tarot deck but all equipment will be provided on the night.

    EYE OF THE STORM (2011) with guest speaker, Producer, Antony Waddington

    The significance of passion projects and smaller films and why we make them.

    The Eye of the Storm is an Australian drama film, directed by Fred Schepisi and shot on location at Centennial Park. It is an adaptation of Australian author Patrick White’s 1973 novel of the same name. The story centres around a dying matriarch who despite her declining health, continues to wield considerable control over her affairs and those around her including her adult children who have come to visit their deteriorating mother.

    Cast includes: Geoffrey Rush, Charlotte Rampling and Judy Davis.

    Eye of the Storm won Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Actress at the AACTA Awards, The Melbourne International Film Festival/Age Critics’ Award for Best Australian Feature Film and the Jury Special Prize at the Rome International Film Festival.

    Antony Waddington has produced the documentaries 'Endurance' (2017), 'Spirits of the Carnival' (1996), the feature film 'Eye of the Storm' (2011) amongst other short documentary films.

Be sure to come dressed in your best Halloween costume, for the chance to win a prize!

    Best for 5–10 year olds, but the whole family is welcome.
