The first practising Catholic Premier of N.S.W. in 1886 and the only
non-Labor one.

RICHARD ST. JOHN HONNER (1898-1962) surgeon and athlete. Admired for
his work in the field of both obstetrics and gynaecology. A track
contestant at the 1924 Paris Olympics.

LAURENCE FOLEY (1849-1917) pugilist. "Champion muscular
Christian of Australia". Bare-knuckle boxing champion of
Australia.

John
was a commanding figure in Sydney's legal, business and religious
circles. His brother, Thomas, was the first to hold the title of
Lord Mayor of Sydney. Thomas' son, Geoffrey, was a distinguished
flying officer in World War I.

JOHN McELHONE (1833-1898) merchant & politician. A strenuous
figure in political life; his endless questions in parliament
exposed many public wrongs.

FRANCIS CAMPBELL BREWER (1836-1911) journalist. Worked on Sydney
newspapers through the l9th century: The Monitor, the Evening News,
the Echo, and the Sydney Herald.

EDMUND RESCH (1847-1923) brewer. Founder of Resch's Waverley
Brewery. Lived at "Swifts", Darling Point.

CATHERINE MARY DAVIS (1846-1931) journalist. Travelling
representative for the Evening News, Town and Country Journal, the
Sydney Mail, Sydney Morning Herald and the Catholic Press.

ROBERT LOGAN JACK (1845-1921) geologist ~ explorer. Government
geologist for the Australian Colony. His geological work for
Queensland was outstanding;

HENRY KING (l855-1923) photographer. His photographs of Australian
aborigines have been highly praised and his Sydney scenes are now
part of our historic heritage.

JOHN LAMB LYON (1835-1916) stained glass painter & art
decorator. Award winning designer of stained glass, a portrait
painter, and decorator of Sydney's G.P.O., Government House and
rooms in Parliament House.

WILLIAM URQUHART (1884-1931) Comptroller General of Prisons. During
his 42 years in the Public Service, he was the controller of several
penal establishments in N.S.W.

CHARLES WILLIAM SHERMAN (1838-1911) Army Veteran. A veteran of the
U.S. Civil War; a rifleman with Company F, 116th New York Infantry
Regiment.

WILLIAM HENRY McNAMARA (1857-1906) socialist agitator and
bookseller. A founder of the Australian Socialist League, organiser
of the Amalgamated Shearers' Union of Australasia.

JULES FRANCOIS ARCHIBALD (1856-1919) journalist. Founder and editor
of "The Bulletin"; endowed the Archibald Art Prize and the
Archibald fountain in Sydney's Hyde Park.

FREDERICK WILLIAM WOLGAST (1891-1921) police constable. Fatally
wounded while pursuing a purse-snatcher in Centennial Park.

LESLIE AUGUSTUS WADE (1864-1915) civil engineer. N.S.W. Irrigation
Commissioner, involved with Sydney's ocean outfall sewer age system,
the Burrinjuck Dam, and the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area.

ERNST BETCHE (1851-1913) botanist. Botanical collector for the
Sydney Botanic Gardens and Assistant Government Botanist, he
accomplished much valuable work in Australian botany.

ERNEST CHARIES DAY (1857-1915) police officer. Rose through the
ranks to become Inspector-General of Police.

JOHN GORDON (1872-1911) scenic artist. One of the best known scenic
artists of his time who worked many years for J.C. Williamson.

LOUIS BECKE (1855-1913) author. Wrote over 30 books of adventure
tales based on his own career in the South Pacific.

Members
of a holiday boating party on Sydney Harbour who drowned when their
boat overturned. Florence and Mary were sisters.

SIR JAMES GRAHAM (1856-1913) physician and politician. A founder of
the Women's Hospital. He was a prime mover in preventing the spread
of bubonic plague $n 1900, and became Sydney's Lord Mayor in 1901.

JAMES CLARKE WAITE (1832-1920) artist. A leading portrait painter
and well known for his ability to portray domestic animals.

James
was a foundation member of the Australian Workers Union and
represented the people of Waverley in the N.S.W. Parliament. Jack
was a well known cricketer, commentator and writer of books on
cricket. Leslie was an active member of the Waverley community
becoming an alderman and Mayor of Waverley.

Walter
was the founder of the firm of Walter Carter Funeral Directors.
Hanson, his son, was a well known wicket keeper and Test cricketer.

WATKIN WYNNE (1844-1921) newspaper manager. A founder and general
manager of Sydney's Daily Telegraph; alderman and mayor of Waverley;
a founder of the Waverley Bowling Club and the Sydney Football Club,
and of the Australian constitution of freemasonry.

FREDERICK MENKENS (1855-1910) architect. Prominent Newcastle
architect who completed the interior of Newcastle Cathedral, St
Andrews Presbyterian Church, the Newcastle School of Arts, and more.

HERBERT EDWARD ROBINSON (1857-1933) map publisher. For half a
century he made mapmaking his hobby as well as his business and his
maps were valued all over the world.

CHARLES WILLIAM MacCARTHY (1848-1919) medical practitioner. A gentle
and skilful surgeon; Chairman of the '98 Centenary Celebration
Committee and designer of Waverley Cemetery's Irish Monument.

EDWARD WILLIAM O'SULLIVAN (1846-1910) journalist and politician. A
founder of the Tasmanian Tribune and the Evening Tribune, he also
worked on the Argus and Daily Telegraph. Secretary for Public Works.

DANIEL O'CONNOR (1844-1914) politician. One of the Colony's most
noted personalities; Postmaster-General 3 times.

ALEXANDER ROBERTSON (1860-1888) jockey. Accidentally killed at
Randwick racecourse whilst riding "Silvermine" in the
Tattersall's Cup.
