Who are the Friends?

FOWL members come from all walks of life. Some are new to the area and some have lived here for years… but they all share the same passion for Waverley Library, literature and serving the community. Why not join to today!

What do the Friends do? 

Since starting in 1993 FOWL volunteers have helped set up library collection, bought artworks, lobbied and contributed towards computers for the children’s and adult libraries and subsidised many wonderful cultural functions for library patrons.

More than 10 years ago our library, which is one of Sydney’s biggest municipal libraries, opened its doors, thanks to the Friends actively lobbying Council to invest in a purpose-built library.

FOWL contributes generously to The Nib/CAL Literary Award. They hold an annual book sale at Oxford Street Mall in Bondi Junction, host concerts, author talks, special members-only events and contributes to the Waverley Library’s school holiday program.

The Friends have their own book club which meets monthly. FOWL also distributes regular newsletters to their members.

The Friends are constantly planning new initiatives and community projects to support the Waverley Library. Why not join today?

How do I join the Friends?

To make friends at Waverley Library and join in a variety of interesting and fun activities throughout the year, complete the membership form, and hand it in to any of the library staff members on duty.

Membership will give you:

  • 10 free reservation vouchers per year
  • 10% discount at selected bookshops
  • Subscription to the FOWL Deeds newsletter
  • Concession rate at FOWL-sponsored events
  • Advance notice of events in the Library
  • Rights to vote at the AGM and eligibility for nomination to the committee

Membership costs $15 ($10 conc.) per year. Discounted rates available for families and groups.

How are the Friends governed?

The Friends have a Constitution. Each year a committee is elected at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The committee consists of a presidents, vice president, secretary, treasurer, literary award representative and general committee members. Any member of FOWL is allowed to nominate to join the committee.
