‘Carnaval’ fever hits Bondi Beach
As the temperature heats up, so does the entertainment. The annual South American Festival – now in its 28th year - is on Sunday 17 February, 1pm-7.30pm.
Waverley Mayor Ingrid Strewe said the festival is a great family day at
Bondi celebrating Central and
South American cultures.
“You can enjoy the energetic and colourful ambience. Each year this festival
captures the sultry
carnival feel and is a whole lot of fun! There’s plenty to see and do – you
can watch a range of
Latino acts or you can get involved and learn a few moves for the dance
floor.””
“There will be children’s activities and workshops, plenty of food stalls
offering the best of South
American cuisine and much more. There’s something for everyone at this great
family day out.”
The best of Sydney’s entertainers will be at the festival including SONIDO
DE LOS ANDES, LATIN
AMERICAN STRING ENSEMBLE, the 10-piece high energy Salsa group SONANDO, the
9-piece
BRAZILIAN SAMBA GROUP, traditional Cuban ARMANDITO Y SU TROVOSON, and SONVENENO.
The finale of the night will be the annual, fabulous extravaganza of
Brazilian drumming, costume,
dance and capoeira with THE BRAZILIAN SHOW.
There will be dynamic dance displays by groups from Cuba, Bolivia, Colombia
and Argentina. Extra
performances by the energetic drumming ensemble SAMBA FROG and CAPOEIRA
BRASIL’s
presentation of the Maculele & Capoeira will also please. This year Capoeira
masters from Brazil will
be visiting Sydney for gradings, so they will be joining in to make an extra
awesome display.
For those who want to get into the groove, dance workshops in Tango, Salsa,
Samba and
Merengue will be available throughout the day. And the showcase gets bigger
with the music and
dance mixed up with the latest Latin House music by DJ DANTE and MC MARSS
between bands,
and DJ DWIGHT CHOCOLATEESCOBA performing in the upstairs bar and seagull
room areas.
For the more creative, there will be costume making workshops and an array
of arts and crafts,
CDs, handcrafted jewellery, tapestries and clothing stalls to wander through
along the Pavilion
forecourt. The Pavilion Gallery will also be displaying a collection of art
with its exhibition presented
by the Consul General of Ecuador, showcasing paintings, ceramics and
surrealist photography from
Ecuadorian artists. The exhibition will run from Tuesday 5 February until
Sunday 17 February.
Tickets available at the door. $20/$15 concession. Children under 12 free.
