It’s Children’s Week

We’re now in the middle of Children’s Week 20-26 October and once again Waverley Council has literacy development as the theme. There will be storytelling sessions at our three council child care centres: Waverley, Bronte and Gardiner which will be assisted by our marvellous children’s library, as well as the regular story telling a the Library.

 Protecting Waverley’s Heritage

All over Australia there are precious collections of photographs, sound recordings and manuscripts which documents our past– the material is irreplaceable and much of it is deteriorating. Some of this material is in local history collections, or with a wide variety of special interest groups. The groups include agricultural societies, and collections relating to interment camps, aviation societies, religion and indigenous history. Federal Government Community Heritage Grants are available for the protection of this material. Across Australia there have been 45 projects funded, including Waverley Council Library, which has been awarded $3,300 for the production of a disaster fund. All the recipients attended a two-day preservation skills workshop on how to care for their valuable collections in the long term.

Avenue of Nations marks Centenary of Federation

Parkfest – a cultural celebration of fun, food, song and dance was held in Centennial Park on Oct 14th where people from divers ethnic backgrounds, including Indonesia, Crete, Nigeria, Spain and Polynesia, conducted food stalls as well as singing, dancing and other cultural events. The highlight of the day was the opening of the Avenue of Nations, an avenue of 170 kauri pines, dedicated to the many nationalities that contribute to Australian society, which the Mayoress and I attended. Centennial Parklands devised the Avenue of Nations to mark the Centenary of Federation.

Surfrider Foundation National Conference

The Surfrider Foundation National Conference will be held at Bondi Pavilion from 27th – 28th October and it is to be opened by the Deputy Premier, Andrew Refshauge.
