National Recycling Week

National Recycling Week will be held from November 20 –26. More than 250 councils are involved in promoting recycling and the "buy right" campaign . The "buy right" campaign encourages people to buy products which have been made from recycled materials. There are already quite a range of products made from recycled materials including flooring, car parts, and furniture. If you would like a "Buy Recycled Guide" please contact: Nicole Greenwood at Waverley Council, 9365 8054. Everyone knows paper and glass can be recycled but what about mobile phones which are no longer usable? Don’t put them in the garbage - take them to: Digicall 501 Oxford Street Sydney.

Rite of Passage

It was my pleasure to attend a very special ceremony, the Upsherinish held at the Hakoah Club for Levi, the three year old son of Rabbi & Rebbetzin Ulman. At the Upsherinish Levi’s hair was cut for the first time and was cut in a special way, leaving the sides long. This Jewish ceremony is a milestone in a child’s life marking the beginning of the long process of Jewish education; it also highlights the responsibilities parents have to their children. Also in attendance was the Minister for Immigration, Philip Ruddock. Rabbi Ulman, the only Russian speaking rabbi in NSW, is head of FREE, Friends of Refugees of Eastern Europe, under the umbrella of the Chabad Lubavitch. He is also a member of the Beth Din (the Jewish Ecclesiastical Court)

Future of Old Bondi Police Station

I recently met with representatives of the Anglican Church at Bondi, Norman Andrews House, St Vincent de Paul, and Peter Debnam MP and a local businesswoman to discuss the future of the old Bondi Police Station. These three church based groups, which do so much to help people in Waverley, are very keen to see the building used for badly needed community services in the Waverley area. As a result of the meeting I will be making representations to the Police Minister for the building to continue being used for the community.

 Friends of Bondi Pavilion

A group of admirers of the heritage listed Bondi Pavilion want to set up a "Friends of Bondi Pavilion". If you are interested in joining do come to the meeting on Monday, 20th November at 8.30pm in the High Tide Room, Southern Courtyard, Bondi Pavilion.
