Waverley Council has been developing strategies to increase the proportion of pedestrians relative to car use. The Green Links Pedestrian Network will establish an integrated network of recreation pedestrian links across the Waverley LGA, provide recreation opportunities for all local residents and visitors, as well as provide links to schools, shops, beaches and transport. There will be 5 Green Links walking routes in total.

The objectives for the Green Links Pedestrian Network have been to:

• Link with existing road user plans such as safer routes to schools, maintenance programs and accessible public transport services;
• Integrate schools and local shops into the design of the links;
• Promote community awareness of links in terms of use and future lane maintenance;
• Improve pathways to encourage people to walk and exercise, such as continuous lighting, upgrade footpaths, signage, improved streetscape;
• Develop safe and convenient crossing opportunities for pedestrians on major roads;
• Realise opportunities for connections with major urban centres and to public transport interchanges;
• Utilise pocket parks, bush care sites, old laneways and road closures in order to link major pedestrian generators around Waverley LGA. This will reduce a pedestrian’s interaction with cars and traffic;
• Identify key strategic links and missing connections; and
• Promote walking to visitors and residents as an alternative to using cars.

Green Links 1 and 2 are now complete and were opened by Waverley Mayor, Ingrid Strewe, at the official launch at Bondi Junction on the 10th July, 2008.

Green Links 1 connects Centennial Park, Bondi Junction and the iconic Bondi Beach with a direct walking route. Centennial Park to Bondi Junction takes 10 minutes, while Bondi Junction to the Beach takes 40 minutes.

Green Links 2 is from Bondi Junction to Queens Park and takes less than 20 minutes.

The walks connect with other picturesque walks in Centennial Park or the coastal walk from Bondi to Bronte Beach. The Council is also greening up the routes through tree planting.

These walks can save you money, improve your health and help the environment. They are an easy way to get around and experience Waverley’s parks and historical sites.
