Climate Change
Climate change, caused by the build-up of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, is one of the most pressing environmental issues confronting the world today.
Australia is one of the world's highest emitters of greenhouse gases per head of population. Approximately one-fifth of Australia's greenhouse gases is generated by households through everyday activities including energy use (mostly from coal), transport and the disposal of waste which decays over time in landfills.
Scientists have found that the consequences of climate change from the enhanced greenhouse effect are very serious. Impacts such as changing weather patterns (more severe droughts and floods and higher rainfall intensity); higher sea levels (as oceans expand and glaciers melt) and increased risk of bushfires are already evident.
Responsibility for reducing Australia’s carbon is shared by all levels of government, the business community, industry, community groups and individuals.
