Maintaining Nature Strips
|
Planting a footpath garden is a beautiful alternative to a grassed nature strip. Click here to find out how. |
In October 2001 arrangements for nature strip mowing changed. Council adopted a new system to prioritise nature strip maintenance to ensure that nature strips in high priority areas are maintained regularly. This is different to the previous system where maintenance was done on request. The new system is currently being reviewed.
We want to do what we can to beautify the area and enhance Waverley’s clean green image for the benefit of everybody in the community. Important thoroughfares and public places have been left wanting and the condition of these areas reflects on our community.
The first priority for nature strip maintenance is the main roads and approaches together with commercial areas and then public places that are difficult for residents to maintain. These areas are outlined on the following map.
Requests from residents with special needs will also be scheduled for regular maintenance. If you are a resident with special needs or if you would like more information on the new system please read the information below. If, after reading this information, you believe that you meet the special needs assessment for nature strip maintenance, contact us at Council and we’ll send you out an application form.
Many residents now have nature strip gardens and have chosen to replace the grass with a garden of small plants. Native plants are good idea as if suitable ones are picked they are easy to maintain.
If you would like more information on which native plants are best to plant or if you would like to get an application form for installing a footpath garden call us at Council on 9369 8000.
Are you eligible for nature strip maintenance?
Eligibility for nature strip maintenance is based on the criteria used by the Road and Traffic Authority for their Mobility Parking Scheme and is available to residents of Waverley who are unable to maintain their nature strips because of a permanent or temporary medical or physical condition. For example: where the applicant requires the use of crutches, a walking frame, callipers, scooter, wheelchair or other similar aids.
Applicants may be eligible where they have a medical/ physical condition that is detrimentally affected as a result of walking 100 metres. Residents who are permanently blind are also eligible.
Please note: nature strip maintenance is provided on the condition that there is no other person(s) residing at the applicant’s address who can undertake required maintenance for the applicant.
If you require an application form please call us on 9369 8000.
