Waverley Council Area - Indigenous Plant Species

Compiled by: D.Hirschfeld

Sauveterre

July 1999

The plants in the following list have been recorded in one or more of the 30 or so small areas where Waverley's original vegetation still survives. Despite the high level of urbanisation, these species have been able to continue their vital natural processes of flowering, seed set, natural germination and growth to maturity to survive the past 200 years.

About 150 species appear in the list. This relatively large number is possibly because of the diverse habitats present. These include: wet (fresh and salt water) and dry soils; deep sands to thin soils on sandstone; sunny and shady sites; exposed east-facing cliffs and sheltered west-facing slopes.

Waverley's vegetation includes one endangered species - Acacia terminalis subsp. terminalis and one endangered plant community - Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub. Both of these are listed under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 [NSW].

Using local native plants

While using local native species in gardens, parks, etc. may benefit their survival, it may also represent another threat. Some species naturally occur over much of NSW or Australia and their genes may vary greatly. Use of plants grown from non-local seed may result in loss of unique local populations because of interbreeding and competition.

Waverley Council is seeking to develop a seedbank of the local flora using ecologically sensitive collection guidelines. Plants grown from local seed may soon be available. Please contact Council's Environmental Officer for more information before using the species in this list.

* = Recorded in only one of the Waverley Council area's 29 known patches of remnant vegetation since 1989.

Common names have been taken from:
Harden, G. (ed) 1990-1993 (Flora of NSW(w 1-4), UNSW Press).
