Waverley Local Hero Awards

Nominations for Waverely Local Hero Awards 2015 are now closed. Thanks to everyone to entered!

Winners will be announced at a special Awards Presentation on 13 August 2015.

The Waverley Local Hero Awards recognise and awards unique individuals whose outstanding achievements or significant contribution boosts our lively community spirit. It's an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of those impassioned to make a difference and those who work hard to make Waverley such a special place to live. 

The Awards

  • Waverley Local Hero Award 2015
  • Waverley Young Local Hero Award 2015 (Nominees must be 25 years old or younger on 13 August 2015)

In 2015, Council will also run a 'Best of Best' Local Hero Award, with a bronze plaque to honour them.

This award will be open to previous Waverley Local Hero winners along with 2015's award recipient. Those up for contention include:

  • Joan 'Heather' Johnson - COTA, 2014 Local Hero
  • Rabbi Dovid Slavin - Our Big Kitcehn, 2013 Local Hero
  • Graham Ford - President SLSA, 2012 Local Hero

Since 2005, Council has honoured twelve local heroes with plaques installed on the promenades along Bondi or Bronte Beach, click here to find out who they are.

Nomination Criteria

Your Local Hero must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • What has your Local Hero achieved to make Waverley a better place to live?
  • What makes your Local Hero's contribution outstanding?
  • Would you consider this person selfless, achieving great things through volunteering or unpaid work?
  • How does your Local Hero inspire others to do exceptional things for the Waverley community?

 

2014 Local Hero Award Winners

Joan 'Heather' Johnson, 2014 Local Hero

Awarded for her outstanding, selfless contribution in her various long standing community roles, specialising in women's and ageing health services. Heather if a Life Member and has significant executive roles with the Australian Council on the Ageing, Waverley and Woollahra Community and Seniors Centre Associations and Quota International NSW.

Liron Smith, 2014 Young Local Hero

Liron, a volunteer with Kids Giving Back, is recognised for his exceptional, motivated and committed volunteering efforts and the ability to inspire others, as well as a substantial contribution across a wide range of charitable and community causes including significant major charities.

2014 Certificates of Commendation

Peter Quartly

Acknowledged for his breadth of service and long term commitment to Friends of Waverley Library (both founding and a member of the executive committee for 25+ years), as well as his commitment to executive volunteer roles including North Bondi Precinct Coordinator, Bondi SLSC and Surf Life Saving Sydney Branch.

Ruth Toflier-Riesel (pictured - Carole Schlessinger, co-founder of Kids Giving Back, accepting on behalf of Ruth)

Acknowledged for her efforts in establishing Kids Giving Back, an innovative approach to creating the next 'Generation of Generosity'.

Nechama Israel

Recognised for her volunteering and fundraising initiatives with Homeless Connect, along with her ability to inpsire others.
