Heritage exemption certificate

The Heritage Exemption Certificate has been introduced to help renovators, builders and developers navigate planning rules for sites within heritage areas or with heritage items.

A Heritage Exemption Certificate may be issued if the works being carried out on a particular site do not have an impact on the significance of the heritage area or item. This means a DA may not need to be lodged for approval of the works.

The Certificate is by application only, and a $103 fee applies.

Apply for a Heritage Exemption Certificate

There are two ways you can lodge an application for a Heritage Exemption Certificate - electronically or in hard copy.

Electronically

Apply online now using our new online certificate service. The process is simple:

Your application will be reviewed and if approved, you will receive an electronic PDF version of your Heritage Exemption Certificate in a reduced time.

Hard copy

You can still request a hard copy of your Certificate and pay either in person or via post. Please note that processing of your certificate may take longer than the electronic processing.

To request a hard copy certificate, please download the Heritage Exemption Certificate application form and complete all of the information. You can then either lodge your application in person at our Customer Service Centre, 55 Spring Street, Bondi Junction and pay the relevant fee. Alternatively, post your completed application form and a cheque for the full amount to:

Before you apply

Please refer to the Waverley Local Environmental Plan 2012 (LEP) Schedule 5 to check whether or not your property has heritage listing before lodging your application for a Heritage Exemption Certificate. 

Please note that a certificate will not be issued for the following works:

  • demolition
  • erection of a building
  • change of use
  • removal/pruning of trees
