Back Ground Information

Waverley Council is made up of twelve councillors elected by the ratepayers and residents of Waverley for a four-year term. Councillors are elected by Ward (a geographical area). Waverley has four Wards. Three of these wards (Bondi, Waverley and Nelson [now Hunter Ward]) were established in 1860, with Lawson Ward being created in 1867. A map of our wards can be found at Waverley Wards

The positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor are decided annually by a vote of all councillors. The current Mayor, Councillor Ingrid Strewe, and Deputy Mayor Councillor Dominic Wy Kanak were elected in September 2007. The next Mayoral election is due in September 2008 following the Council election.

Information for voters

To be included on the roll of non resident electors you must complete an application form. The non resident roll is made up of non-resident owners of rateable land or occupiers and rate paying lessees.

To qualify for enrolment as a non-resident elector, a person must be an owner or nominated by the owner or owners of rateable land in a ward of the area. Rateable land means land that is rateable to an ordinary rate or a special rate, or both.

A person is an occupier of rateable land if the person has a legally enforceable right to continuous occupation of rateable land (jointly or severally, but not as owner or rate paying lessee) for not less than 3 years following the relevant date.

A person is a rate paying lessee of rateable land if the person is jointly or severally liable, under a lease in writing or other document of title relating to the land, to pay to any person the whole or any part of any rates that may, during the 3 years following the relevant date, be made or levied in respect of the land.

If there is more than one occupier or rate paying lessee of the same parcel of rateable land, only one of them is entitled to be enrolled as an elector for a ward.
