Waverley's Emblem

Waverley's Emblem The Emblem shows two dolphins and Neptune's trident, or three-pronged spear, with an ornamental scroll at the bottom bearing the name of the Municipality. It was adopted by the Council in 1915 but the reasons for the design of the Emblem are not clear.

However, we can assume that as the whole of Waverley's eastern boundary is the ocean, something symbolic of the sea would be appropriate. The inclusion of the dolphins might be because they live in the sea and are friendly towards people.

It is fairly easy to guess why a trident was chosen for the Emblem. The ancient Romans believed the God of the Sea was called Neptune and that he had a three-pronged spear called a trident which he used to shatter rocks and cause earthquakes.

As well, Neptune was said by the Romans to have transformed himself into a dolphin.
